DAISY JONES & THE SIX – A Review by Jenn Rohm

DAISY JONES & THE SIX – A Review by Jenn Rohm

New York Times Best Seller (2019) Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid is coming to Amazon Prime in a weekly episode release mini-series.  This is a story of a fictional band (inspired by, yet not the story of, Fleetwood Mac) telling how they started, rose to fame, and then walked away after a sold-out Soldier Field (Chicago) concert.  This series format is a series of interviews (think Behind the Music) with different members of the band that switch to flashbacks.

I would like to give props to the casting, make-up, and wardrobe departments as the characters show realistic age progression/regression (20-30 year spread).  Honestly, it annoys me when they put someone in a grey wig and add wrinkles to convey being older.  There are a lot more options available to make someone look older and those involved in filming used those options.  At various times not only is fashion different but our choice of clothing is as well.  In the 70s, a lot of males would walk around shirtless or in t-shirts.  More current fashion trends impact that at a certain age, a button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up or a zip-up collared jacket is preferred over shirtless.  For the make-up crew, they chose to use shadow and not just prosthetic wrinkles.

The cast themselves also did well with representing the different ages they were at for each scene being filmed.  Allow me to introduce you to the band:

Daisy Jones, Riley Keough (yes, she would have called Elvis “Grandpa”)

Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin)

Graham Dunne (Will Harrison)

Eddie Roundtree (Josh Whitehouse)

Warren Rhodes (Sebastian Chacon)

Karen Sirko (Suki Waterhouse)

Other characters that help them on the path to fame:

Simone Jackson (Nabiyah Be)

Rod Reyes (Timothy Oliphant)

Teddy Price (Tom Wright)

There are a few places where the movement was a bit slow, such as the scenes with Daisy in her early years being an afterthought to her parents and joining the late 60s LA rock scene.  And a little bit of predictability, one of the females becomes pregnant, so there is a wedding.  While another female character needs to “play nice” with a man in the business and does not, which impacts her career.  These things did not prevent me from going to the next episode.  (Reminder this series is being released an episode each week.  It will not be “binge-able” for 10 weeks).  Well before the last episode, I had fallen in love with the characters.  I know this is a mini-series due to the limited material to pull from and even in real-life “where are they now” type stories, life goes on after filming stops.  I can accept how the series ended.  At the same time, because I am invested in them, I want to know what happens next.

For those of you that are music fans.  The songs written in the book have been put to music, recorded, and the album Aurora by Daisy Jones & the Six is available for purchase.  Just like the mini-series, the songs are released weekly.

OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE – A Review by Jenn Rohm

OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE – A Review by Jenn Rohm

There is something about a well-dressed man, with a British accent, saving the world.  Add in a classic American muscle car chase and I am all in.

Guy Ritchie brings us his new film Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre.  As Ritchie likes to do, he works with actors he is familiar with to bring his vision to us.  And in this case, even the grill from The Gentlemen makes an appearance.

Nathan (Carey Elwes) is called in by a British Government Official to reclaim a stolen “something”.  Nathan pulls in his best for the job with, Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) to lead the way.  Nathan also ensures Fortune has his required extravagances, such as an 1982 Chateau Margaux, and a good support crew with Sarah (Aubrey Plaza) and JJ (Bugzy Malone).  Together they are out to save the day.

Aubrey Plaza was a strong choice for Sarah.  I remember her as Cat on four episodes of Criminal Minds and liked her very dry delivery.  In this film, she does not back down in proving her worth to the team, while still having fun with them as seen when she sings along to “Raindrops keep falling on my head.”  A strong female co-lead, given the freedom to be smart and effective with a bit of sass who isn’t just eye candy, was refreshing.

With the leading men, bringing what we have come to expect from them, there are others who round out the cast and bring their own to the story.  Eddie Marsan is Knighton, the Government Official.  Hugh Grant as Greg has more money and connections than he knows what to do with.  Josh Hartnett is Danny, an American Movie Star, whom everyone wants to meet, helps to open some doors.

There is also a car chase involving a classic Ford Mustang.  True, Bullitt had a ’68 and this one is a ’66.  It is still a nice homage toward one of the greatest car chase scenes in movie history.

Props to the costume design team who did a wonderful job with the tailoring of the quality suits.  There is also a red dress that Sarah wears to a fundraiser that reminded me of Julia Roberts’ opera dress in Pretty Woman, simply stunning.

This is a spy/action movie.  It was a good choice for an escape from everyday life and I will see it again… and most likely buy the DVD when available to watch when I want.

COCAINE BEAR – A Review by Jenn Rohm

COCAINE BEAR – A Review by Jenn Rohm

Truth, in September 1985 drugs were dropped out of a plane in Tennessee.  Then in December 1985, an American black bear was found dead in Georgia having eaten around 75 pounds of cocaine.  The bear was taxidermized and can be seen at the “Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall” in Lexington, Kentucky.  This story about Pablo Eskobear (yes, I remember the name in the news in 85) has been used as a jumping-off point for the Universal Pictures film Cocaine Bear.

Loosely based on a real story, after cocaine is dropped out of an airplane and the person who dropped it is found in a person’s driveway with a bag of the cocaine after his parachute didn’t open.  A few different character stories cross paths in a Georgia National Park where an American black bear has eaten cocaine, and she wants more.

Sari (Keri Russell) is doing her best as a single mom to Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince).  Dee Dee convinces her partner in crime Henry (Christian Convery) to skip school.  While Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) is trying to get his friend Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich) to get himself together with the backing of Eddie’s father Syd (Ray Liotta).  Ranger Liz (Margo Martindale) is hoping to catch Peter’s (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), eye.  The police officer trying to track down Syd is Bob (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) who enlists Officer Reba (Ayoola Smart) to assist with watching Rosette.  All while Kid (Stache) (Aaron Holliday), with Vest (J.B. Moore) and Ponytail (Leo Hanna) attempt to stab the wrong person.

I have heard about concerns over 12-year-old children doing drugs.  To be clear this film is in no way a glorification or an encouragement to do drugs.  In fact, you could say the characters are scared straight over the use of drugs before the movie ends.   It was a risk having this as part of the story and I am glad they took the risk.

This movie had me jumping, laughing, catching hidden jokes, and wondering what I was watching.  It was a campy fun movie that isn’t like others out there I enjoyed it and am glad I took the time to watch it.

EMILY – A Review by Jenn Rohm

EMILY – A Review by Jenn Rohm

Emily Bronte was a very private person who kept much to herself and not so much in her diary.  Without documentation, it does prevent the ability to produce a true slice-of-life tale.  The cast and crew have done a good job of respecting the time period and giving a sense of what life may have been like in the late 1840s.  This is done with costuming, music, and weather.  (Rain in particular.) Painfully shy Emily is trying to find her place in the world and is finding “Freedom in thought” along the way.

There are some obvious issues with the story such as Wuthering Heights being published under her own name as opposed to Ellis Bell.  (For shame Women can’t write, only Men can be published.)  Her Father publicly praising her, again at this time and with his dedication to the church, this was not realistic.  Then we have a supposed romance between Emily and William Weightman, curate to Patrick Bronte.  A part of me wishes this was “loosely based on the life of” rather than being advised as “the story of”.

If you are a fan of gothic romance Emily will be up your alley.  For others, the pacing can come across as a bit slow and the emotions are not fully on display.
