A CHRISTMAS STORY – A Review by Gadi Elkon

“Set in 1940s Indiana, a young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish.”

Here is my review of ATTPAC’s A CHRISTMAS STORY.

American Humorist and radio announcer Jean Shepherd gave us “In God We Trust:  All Others Pay Cash”, to tell the tale of youth in a world on the brink of war.  His work would be adapted into the 1980’s classic film, A Christmas Story.  The overall narration into a young boy’s Xmas wish for a scoped rifle have been now shown for decades and touched numerous generations.  The elements are a bit out dated or you may call it nostalgia.  The story isn’t changed or manipulated in this touring production.  You will see all the classic scenes and feel all the same emotions Ralphie felt.

This production is a quality night out with the family and allows for you to tell the youngsters about your crazy Christmas tales.  Paul Nobrega’s take on “The Old Man” aka pops is one of the real highlight performances.  The kids are well rehearsed and depending on your day you may see Michael Norman or Ian Shaw as your Ralphie.  The role is going to be spot on to Peter Billingsley movie performance.  Though Peter’s famous physicality is hard to replicate on stage.  The kid performers do stand out in the tap dancing numbers in the two acts.  I was amazed about how on point the ensemble was during those crazy fast feet numbers.  A special shout out to Hoss and Stella the two bumpus hounds!  They hit their marks and devour The Old Man’s turkey with a real gusto.

The stage design as a giant snow globe was either a real moment of genius or me just looking at the stage weirdly.

In the end you’ll keep your tongue off icy poles and make sure to not shoot your eye out as Ralphie tells his tale.

A Christmas Story runs through this weekend so grab the kids and get your holiday fix!
