In this fifth of the Die Hard series, hard hitting NY cop John McClane has tracked down his son, Jack. His information is that Jack’s in Russia and may be about to go to prison. John takes vacation time to fly to Russia with no idea how he was going to get Jack out of trouble. Not exactly out of character for John.
John arrives at the courthouse in time to see the aftermath of car bombs going off next to the courtroom’s outer wall. Jack and Russian politician turned whistle-blower, Komorov, are escaping in the chaos. Seeing the two about to drive away in a delivery truck, John pulls the “dad routine” stopping the truck and demanding Jack get out and come with him. When the bombers start shooting at them, Jack drives off and John steals a truck to chase them. What follows is one of the best chase scenes I’ve seen in years! The armored truck the bad guys are driving is Hot! The crashes are wild and watching McClane destroying not one Mercedes Benz vehicle (the big truck he begins the chase with) but a Mercedes SUV he steals the Russian freeway.
John “I do it my way” McClane has one idea in his head. Stop the bad guys and save his son. No thought about why Jack’s doing what he is doing or whether he should get involved in whatever is going on. No, he just jumps in as only the great John McClane can!
This film has cool vehicles and interesting locations (including Chernobyl), cool Russian military helicopters, and lots of explosions! It has the CIA, predator drones, and lots of explosions! Oh, and that look on John’s face when he realizes that Jack has a career of his own, get used to it!
A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD is well worth the price of admission. After 25 years, the series is still a great ride! Like the original, Bruce Willis brings John McClane to life with gusto. Like the posters say, YIPPEE KAY YAY, MOTHER RUSSIA!
