The Austin Film Festival 2015 honored Director John Singleton with the Extraordinary Contribution to Film and Acting Award, along with actor Chris Cooper. The festival held a special retrospective screening of Boyz n the Hood with Singleton and his producer Steve Nicolaides conducting a powerful Q & A following the screening. Producer Steve Nicolaides gave an emotional introduction and conducted an insightful and thorough Q & A with John about their time making the iconic Boyz n the Hood. They discussed the tremendous ovation and reception for Boyz at the 44th Cannes Film Festival in 1991, the first time John had ever left the country. It was an incredible time learning about this 90's classic film. Prior to the screening, I had a great time chatting with John about the fact that he's currently filming SnowFall (FX picked up for 2016) in the same areas as Boyz was shot 25 years to the month. We also talk about the impact the documentary Straight Outta Compton has had on Boyz n the Hood being revisited by many theaters.
