BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE – A Review by John Strange
Bob Marley is a legend in the music world. With his band, the Wailers, Bob made reggae music something the world listened to.
This is an honest film that shows the bad as well as the good parts of the artist’s life. Bob’s son, Ziggy, was a producer on the film. At the beginning of the film, Ziggy appears on the screen welcoming the audience and letting us know that he was on set every day to ensure that the film remained true to the reality of his father’s life.
Born into a life with little opportunity to better himself in the poor part of the island of Jamaica, the young man turned his music into a career that took him around the world. His life, as depicted by this film, was happy because his attitude toward life made it so.
There are a few items in the life of Bob Marley that unsettled me. Probably because I didn’t have the life experiences required to truly understand them. His views on life were based on his early life and his religion both of which were very different than mine. They led him to live his life as he did.
I love documentaries and this type of drama because they DO sometimes unsettle or even disturb me because they show me a world I have not experienced before. Bob Marley: One Love is an excellent example of this type of film. I learned about an artist whose music I admire though parts of his life made me very sad.
