PAUL HINDEMITH’S KAMMERMUSIK NO 1 (1921)
Quirky and irreverent, German born composer Paul Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 1 was received with great enthusiasm at the 1922 Donaueschingen new-music festival. The work fuses the post-World War I influence of American jazz with German neo-classicism, as the composer strives to speak to the common person, and especially the non-academic, American new-wealth society, emerging in the early 20th century.
Created the same year as Buster Keaton’s THE GOAT, Hindemith’s cheerful suite smacks of the composer’s early experience performing in dance bands and musical-comedy orchestras. Driving rhythms and scintillating orchestrations abound, until the unrestrained finale – which the composer wrote first. Conductor Riccardo Chailly has said quite famously of the Finale, “The climax comes with the quotation, by the trumpet, of a contemporary foxtrot in G Major (by the light-music composer Wilm Wilm), accompanied by scales in all the other 11 major keys, and the end is manic [enough for] any great comedy of the silent screen." It’s the perfect prelude for the evening’s program.
PAUL MORAVEC’S CHAMBER SYMPHONY (2003)
American composer Paul Moravec’s Chamber Symphony is a tour de force of technique and rhythmic vitality. His musical language is modern yet accessible, and will inspire audience members to seek out his recordings if they’re not already familiar with his work. Recipient of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Music, Moravec has composed orchestral, chamber, choral, operatic and lyric pieces. His music has earned many distinctions, including the Rome Prize Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, three awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia University, he has taught at Columbia, Dartmouth, and Hunter College and currently holds the unique position of University Professor at Adelphi University. He was the 2013 Paul Fromm Composer-in-Residence at the American Academy in Rome, recently served as Artist-in-Residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, and was also recently elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society.
BUSTER KEATON'S 2-REEL COMEDY, THE GOAT (1921)
After intermission, the Orchestra premieres a new film score by Jon Kull to a screening of THE GOAT starring Buster Keaton. Buster is mistaken as the outlaw “Dead Shot Dan,” and hilarity ensues when the cops give chase. Exhibitors Herald magazine in July 1921 called THE GOAT “…one comical situation after another until the whirlwind finish.” The new film score is Dallas Chamber Symphony’s tenth commission to date.
ABOUT FILM COMPOSER JON KULL
Writing the new score for Buster Keaton’s THE GOAT is Jon Kull, who will be in attendance at the premiere. He maintains a busy and diverse schedule covering many musical disciplines. He has amassed over 175 credits as an orchestrator, working with many of the top composers in Hollywood on some of their biggest projects, including James Horner (AVATAR), Elmer Bernstein (TWILIGHT), Christopher Young (SPIDER-MAN 3), Marco Beltrami (FANTASTIC FOUR) and James Newton Howard (MALEFICENT).
Kull is a graduate of the University of Colorado (BM, MM) and holds a certificate in Film Scoring from the University of Southern California.
