ELF THE MUSICAL – A Theater Review by Hollywood Hernandez

If Elf The Musical doesn't get you into the Christmas spirit you really are a Grinch!  Elf, currently playing at The Music Hall at Fair Park, is an adaptation of the 2003 movie that starred Will Ferrell.  The Elf in the musical stage play is played by Erick Williams, a 6ft tall wannabe elf who was raised by the tiny toymakers and who finally figures out that he is a human.  After Santa tells him that his real mother died in childbirth he leaves the North Pole in search of his real dad in the bustling metropolis of Manhattan.  To makes matters worse, Santa tells him that his real dad has been on the "naughty list."

The play follows the basic premise of the movie but, with all of the musical numbers in the show, it barely resembles Jon Favreau's original movie.  However, the musical version is a lot more fun.  Williams plays his character like an elf all hyped up on sugar (which he is) and the songs will have you singing along.  ("The Story of Buddy the Elf" was my favorite.  It had me singing it all the way home.)

Elf is a great event for the whole family.  It's about family, falling in love and is a fun play with some really good music.  Elf The Musical is for the whole family.  It runs through December 2nd as part of the Dallas Summer Musical series.  Tickets are available online at Fair Park Box Office – ElfTheMusical.
