GREEDY PEOPLE – A Review by Jenn Rohm

GREEDY PEOPLE – A Review by Jenn Rohm

On the first day of a new job in a new town, with a lot to look forward to, a couple of choices made by others lead to a huge mistake.  What choices do you make next, and how do they lead to the next moment of making a choice?  Based on the script written by Mike Vukadinovich and directed by Potsy Ponciroli, Greedy People will be available in theaters on August 23, 2024.

I just learned about this film the other day and saw a partial list of cast members: Himesh Patel, Lily James (whom I adored as a couple in Yesterday), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Uzo Aduba.  This was enough to pique my interest.  I got my cold drink, a tasty snack and got comfy to sit back and watch.  It took a few moments to get into the film, but once I was in, wow, what a ride.  I do not want to give out the names of many of the cast, as part of the fun was when a few of them popped up on the screen.  Everyone did a stellar job.  There is a scene where the character, The Irishman, is in a restaurant.  It was one of the most John Malkovich performances by someone who is not John Malkovich, and I want to watch it repeatedly.

A well-engineered plan is required when making a black comedy.  Just how far and dark do you take a joke?  What can lighten things back up yet not ruin the moment?  Where does the next surprise go, and is it keeping things dark, giving some breathing room, or is it a surprise in the cast?  My introduction to this genre was the film Heathers, with Death Becomes Her, Delicatessen, and Welcome to the Doll House not long after.  I am glad I saw these films when I did, as had I watched them after seeing Greedy People, I am not sure they would maintain their ranking on my personal list.

This is one I will add to my collection and watch multiple times.
