LEGO STAR WARS: THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES (SEASON 2) – DVD Review by John Strange
I have now had a chance to do a reviews some of the Lego Star Wars TV shows. Some of you may not be surprised by the fact that I am really enjoying the opportunities! These shows are campy at times but over-all the stories are well written and fun to watch.
Today's review is for Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures (Season 2). As I sat in front of my big screen TV watching these episodes, I watched the Freemakers, older brother Zander (Eugene Byrd), older sister Kordi (Vanessa Lengies), young Jedi-in-training Rowan (Nicolas Cantu), fly by the seat of their pants as they help the Resistance fight the evil Emperor Palpatine (Trevor Devall) and Darth Vader (Matt Sloan).
The family slowly becomes more and more entwined in the day-to-day lives of the rebel fleet. It is their ingenuity and dedication to the cause. We learn more about Rowan's connection to the Force. I have to say that his ability to use the Force is different than Luke Skywalker's but possibly even more important to the fight than Luke could ever be.
In this season, the family spend a lot of their time eluding (or getting captured by and then escaping from) and out thinking the forces of the Empire. It seems Rowan got his hands on the most powerful weapon in the universe, the Kyber Saber, last season and destroyed it by dropping it in a pool of lava (after saving the day with it)! The emperor doesn't know the saber is gone and he REALLY wants it! And Rowan, too!
After a while you begin to ignore things like their hands have no fingers and their hair comes off their heads. The action sequences are written such that each episode can be watched individually but the season's episodes, taken all together have the feeling of watching a regular Star Wars film.
The stories are well written and the animation is excellent. After enjoying the 12 episodes for season two, I watched the five bonus shorts they provided. Like the episodes, these bonus shorts were a lot of fun to watch! Some of the other characters you'll see from the live action films are Leia, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, Admiral Ackbar, and even Jabba the Hut.
The kids will enjoy these episodes but the adults will, too! This series is obviously written by people with an idea of how the Star Wars universe is supposed to look and how the characters will act. As I said earlier, there are a few spoof-ish/comedic aspects to a few of the stories but overall I have to say I had a great time watching them! I have not seen Season 1. I am going to have to go buy it for my collection (and watch it, of course)!
And for all of you Star Wars collectors! This edition also comes with an exclusive Darth Vader pin!
