OCEAN'S 8 – A Review by Hollywood Hernandez

Ocean's 8 is the female version of the Ocean's 11-13 series that starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt.  Sandra Bullock is the ring leader of this crew and after five years in prison she's devises a plan to steal a necklace with a value of $150 million dollars.  To the film's credit there is no time in the movie where the female players are short changed because of their gender.  These ladies are great at the con game and they give the good old boys a run for their money.

Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the long lost sister of Danny Ocean.  Fresh out of prison she goes to work gathering a team to help her with her plan to steal a priceless piece of jewelry right off the neck of a famous actress (Anne Hathaway) at a big fashion gala in New York.  Her crew includes Cate Blanchett as her main partner, Mindy Kailing as the on the spot jewelry maker and a small but pivotal role by Rihanna as the computer hacker and security specialist who wisecracks her way through the movie.

Ocean's 8 is a really well done "caper film" with enough interesting plot twists to keep you engaged for the entire hour and 50 minute movie.  The best part of the movie is watching Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett hand pick their crew of criminal experts.  It is a movie that is very "star driven."  It also, very smartly, uses real fashion icons and celebrities to give the high fashion gala a good dose of realism; including the Kardashians, Tommy Hilfiger, Matt Damon, Katie Holmes, and Tyga in cameo roles.

Ocean's 8 is a fun ride and a welcome reprieve from all of the summer's super hero and special effects movies.  The movie is light summer fare during a summer of serious films with more gun play than a graphic video game.  It's also a movie that empowers women.  It shows what woman can do when they all work together for a common purpose; even if that purpose is committing a crime.

The movie is rated PG-13 and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Ocean's 8, a LARGE.
