TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM – A Review by John Strange
I was not sure that it was going to be worth my time to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. There have been so many versions and storylines over the years that I doubted I would see anything new. I didn’t count on the minds of Brendan O’Brien, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Jeff Rowe.
These minds came up with a re-imagining that is at first, due to the style of animation, a bit jarring to watch. But the animation style gets less jarring as we get used to the visuals and become engrossed in the story.
And it’s a good story, one that gives a well-thought-out origin for the teenage turtles and their rat guardian. And some interesting heavies that made me smile.
Superfly (voiced by Ice Cube) is the first mutant created by scientist Baxter Stockman (voiced by Giancarlo Esposito) who has gone “rogue” from Techno Cosmic Research Institute. Superfly and his “father” are attacked by a strike force from institute (Cynthia Ultrom) who succeed in killing the scientist but miss the young fly.
Cynthia Utrom (voiced by Maya Rudolph) is a perfect villain for a story like this. Visually, she has a well-designed look that screams villain, and her scripted lines confirm that feeling! And Superfly’s plans for the world are as diabolical as any I have seen in all of my decades as a filmgoer or a film critic.
The film even manages to pass along a message about acceptance amidst the action!
In the end, I found that I had watched a great franchise restart. I think this one has legs! I think Master Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan), Leonardo (voiced by Nicolas Cantu), Raphael (voiced by Brady Noon), Donatello (voiced by Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (voiced by Shamon Brown Jr.), and April O’Neil (voiced by Ayo Edebiri) will be back on our screens (as will Cynthia Utrom)! A 5-star film!

THE BEANIE BUBBLE – A Review by John Strange
Beanie Babies were a weird craze that went to heights (or lows, depending upon which side of the craze you found yourself on) not seen before. Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis) was the inventor of the dolls. He brought in Robbie Jones (Elizabeth Banks), a woman working in a dead-end job to help him. Later, Maya Kumar (Geraldine Viswanathan), a 17-year-old college student, came on board.
Robbie was the sales guru while Maya’s expertise was computers and manipulating the fans to buy and trade their beanies.
I was one of those people who enjoyed buying various Beanie Babies, but I never went nuts over it (though some who did, went on to make millions of dollars with their trades). The craze went to extremes no one could have predicted.
This could have been an excellent film, but the filmmakers decided to go back and forth between the 80s and 90s, telling the stories in vignettes that sadly made the story more and more confusing as it went deeper and deeper into the somewhat bizarre life that Ty Warner led.
This is an interesting story but will only make sense if you can keep multiple plotlines that snake around each other on their way to a conclusion or, like me, you lived through that era. Sorry, but my rating is a generous 3.5 stars.

THEATER CAMP – A Review by Jenn Rohm
In 2020, a short film by Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman, Ben Platt, and Noah Galvin was released. This short has been turned into a full-length film of the same name, Theater Camp.
A documentary is being filmed about a theater summer camp and on the first day of filming the owner of the camp has a stroke and ends up in a coma. The documentary continues following the summer run of camp for the year. Her son who knows nothing about theater comes to take over and returning teachers and counselors continue as they have for years.
With the adults in the cast portraying caricatures strong on the stereotyping, it was a struggle to connect. I did find this especially ironic in the scenes where coaching for more of the kids in their performances for productions was taking place.
The additional sub-plots took away from the film for me. The dinner party at the camp became offensive with the use of a real organization that does a lot of good in the world. A teacher at the camp that doesn’t know anything about theater came across as just needing another adult on the cast. The party with the other camp. The acting was well done, just the plots themselves could have been left out of the film.
This is a mockumentary with the concept written out and openings for improv over memorized script. This style takes a strong cast to carry out the story. With most of the cast being the kids attending the camp, Casting did a great job with their selections. I expect to see some of these faces on Broadway or starring in feature films in the future.
Those that took theater classes, attended theater workshops, and or theater camps while growing up will have memories of their childhood. This is really a film for the thespians out there. For me, the sibling of a theater kid, a lot was lost. Many of those in the audience I was with laughed the whole way through the film. For me, with three separate time checks, the last third was the most entertaining.

Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Film Festival 2023 Announces Film Lineup With Big Focus on Ukraine and Poland
Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Film Festival announced the film lineup for its 12th edition, which will return to indoors screenings for the first time in two years August 2-6. GFF will kick things off with an Opening Night “Echoes of Ukraine” theme featuring Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Roslowski’s documentary The Hamlet Syndrome. Saim Sadiq’s Joyland will be the Closing Night selection.
As it has for more than a decade, the film festival will be screening and celebrating truly independent films and filmmakers, a world away from the studios and (especially notable at this time) the AMPTP.
The film festival will include 48 films (10 features, 38 shorts), with screenings at The Boiler / ELM Foundation (191 N. 14th Street). Along with the Opening Night selection, this year’s lineup has strong representation from Poland, along with Greenpoint FF’s solid survey of stateside indie films. Film industry catering favorites Wilson Rivas Crafts will have a food truck on the premises providing food and concessions for film goers and attendees. The Boiler’s backyard will serve as the film festival’s film-centric community mixer epicenter – open to the public and serving food and beverages before everyone heads inside for that day or evening’s air-conditioned screenings.
Filmmakers and celebrity guests will participate in GFF’s green “red” carpet, and the Filmmaker Awards will be presented prior to the Closing Night screening. Short film award winners will receive a “Short to Feature Accelerator” prize by R2W2.
Greenpoint Film Festival Creative Director Ricardo Vilar, said, “We are thrilled to be returning indoors for this year’s edition of the film festival. We’re having fun when say we are “steaming” our films this year since we’ll be in The Boiler but our lineup definitely has a lot of heat with award winners, thought provoking subjects, exciting new talent, and more. For more than a decade, we have celebrated cinema here in North Brooklyn, and this year’s edition looks to be one of our strongest yet.”
The Opening Night presentation on Thursday, August 3 is themed “Echoes of Ukraine” featuring Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Roslowski’s The Hamlet Syndrome. The film looks at a group of young Ukrainian actors, each with psychological scars of the war in Donbas, who are cast in an experimental theatrical production of Hamlet. As they confront Hamlet’s famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy, the actors process their own dilemmas, mere months prior to Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of their country. The screening will be preceded by Orr Bortman’s short documentary Lesyk a.k.a. Words of Wisdom which profiles Astoria’s Alexander Lesyk Balaban, a Ukraininan stamp collector who’s prized collection is part of the fight for the survival of Ukraine’s identity and history.
The Closing Night selection is Saim Sadiq’s feature film debut Joyland. The first Pakistani film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize as well as the Queer Palm. The film follows a man who takes a job as a backup dancer at a Bollywood-style burlesque. His infatuation with another performer, a dynamic and strong-willed trans woman leads to trouble and complications with his family and wife. The presentation will feature a special pre-recorded interview with Sadiq and cast members with Siddhant Adlakha following the screening.
Highlights among the other features include two films from Poland with kids at the center of their stories. Piotr Stasik’s Film For Aliens is about a boy given the task to make a film for aliens that will help save the world, and Ana Maria Kasperska’s Hela focuses on a teenage girl who makes up her mind to track down her recently adopted little sister and bring her back so they can be together.
On Wednesday, August 2, Michał Kwieciński’s Filip will be screened at a special invite only Greenpoint FF preview at the Polish Consulate. Based on Leopold Tyrmand’s autobiographical novel, the film is a gritty character study focused on a handsome young Polish Jew who escapes the Warsaw Ghetto and disguises himself as a French Gentile so he can work as a waiter in an exclusive hotel and restaurant in Frankfurt. He revels being in the center of luxury and romancing Aryan women – which is punishable by death. When the war begins to take a bloody toll on those closest to him, his intricately built alternate life and world starts to crumble.
Filmmaker-focused highlights include a special workshop, “How to Make a Documentary in One Day,” for young, aspiring filmmakers (21 years-old or less) and will be taught by Piotr Stasik (Director, Film For Aliens). The workshop will focus on ways the kids can tell stories via film. More information on the workshop is HERE (Google forms to apply).
Part and parcel of the Festival’s mission is to call for a green and eco-friendly future and with that in mind, the festival is teaming up with New York City’s largest soundstage company – Broadway Stages, who has made an unparalleled commitment to renewable energy by conveying solar power to their soundstages and productions.
