Waco’s Deep in the Heart Film Festival Announces Full 2023 Lineup

The Deep in the Heart Film Festival announced the film and events lineup for its 7thedition, which will combine in-theater screenings July 20-23, followed by an online encore July 24-30. Deep in the Heart FF will kick things off with an Opening Night presentation of Dawn Mikkelson and Keri Pickett’s film festival sensation Finding Her Beat, and Anna Baumgarten’s decorated drama Disfluency will be the Closing Night selection. The festival will also present a special multi-media screening and performance of Greg Brownderville and Bart Weiss’ critically acclaimed Southern Gothic shaggy dog story Fire Bones, and a Friday Night Spotlight screening of Thaddeus D. Matula’s inspiring documentary Into the Spotlight.

With screenings at the historic Waco Hippodrome and Cultivate 7twelve, and a program divided into four categories: Crowd Pleasers, Deep Dives, Family Friendly, and For the Curious and Adventurous, the Deep in the Heart FF has once again worked to add more to the popular film festival’s screenings, events, and presentations to make it even more audience-friendly and easy to access and enjoy as they head to the movie theaters. The programming tracks were created to help audiences understand the tone of the films and make it easier for people to discover the movies that fit their tastes. The screening schedule will include 127 films (9 features, 106 shorts, 12 music videos), and 1 multi-media project).

Deep in the Heart FF co-founders and directors Samuel Thomas and Louis Hunter, said, “For this year’s edition of the film festival we are emphasizing what leads the way in every decision we make: Waco, independent, and film. We have added more feature films as we keep growing the film festival, but we will continue to focus on giving our filmmakers help with their development as artists, and work to encourage them to come back to town to shoot their next project here. Of course, we also enjoy having a reputation as a really fun film festival to attend whether you are a film fan or a filmmaker so all the favorites will return on that front as well.”

Opening Night ‘s Red Carpet Gala evening will feature Dawn Mikkelson and Keri Pickett’s Finding Her Beat, a certified hit on the regional festival circuit, screening coast-to-coast and leaving energized audiences in its wake over the course of the past year. The film follows the efforts of two women to assemble the world’s best female Taiko drummers in a bold effort to claim a cultural spotlight that has historically been reserved only for men. As the clock ticks toward their first performance, it becomes clear that their story has become much larger than Taiko. The screening will also include a live performance of Taiko drumming as part of the presentation.

Friday will feature two things that Deep in the Heart FF has made its name on: innovation and films that touch people personally. The afternoon will include a special stage and screen presentation with live music led by Dallas’ Greg Brownderville and Bart Weiss as they introduce audiences to their one-of-a-kind multi-media creation, FIre Bones. A whimsical Southern Gothic shaggy dog story told in ten chapters via multiple mediums including podcasts, short films, music videos, poems, and still images. Fire Bones follows a poet and filmmaker  who meet one crazy character after another as they investigate the mystery  of  a  missing  pilot  and  Pentecostal  preacher who  vanished  on  a  transatlantic  flight.  Created  with  smartphones  in  mind, the project includes  podcasts,  short  films,  music  videos, poems,  and  still  images.

Friday evening will be the Spotlight Feature screening of Thaddeus D. Matula’s Into the Spotlight. In the film, Matula follows a musical theatre program for young adults with disabilities as they prepared for their annual production at the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. The film is told from the perspective of the cast in the play as they share their challenges and triumphs through the 2021-22 season. The screening is co-presented with the Texas Behavioral Health Network.

The Closing Night selection is Anna Baumgarten’s Disfluency, about the struggles of a brilliant young woman, who returns home to her family’s lake house as she tries to come to terms with the confusing drama that derailed her senior year in college. The film has received an impressive number of awards on the regional festival circuit, including the Capital City Film Festival, deadCenter, Ouray FF, Oxford FF, and the Austin Film Festival.

Highlights among the additional independently made features coming to Waco include Johana Putnam’s mystery Shudderbugs about a woman, who returns to her childhood home when her mother suddenly passes. In place of familiar spaces and memories, she discovers unsettling mysteries, leading her to follow a scavenger hunt her mom had prepared for her upcoming birthday, while she wrestles with her own sanity. Additional indie documentaries include Zac Zlatic’s City Kids which follows the efforts of a couple who has dedicated the past 30 years to changing the lives of inner city kids from San Antonio, and Alexander Jeffery’s You Have No Idea, which tells the extraordinary story of Evan James. When he was diagnosed with Autism in the early 90s, treatment options were limited. However, his mother Beth set out to provide her son with a life filled with purpose and friendship, and the rest of their friends and family followed suit as they helped create a wonderful world for him to thrive in despite the challenges.

Jeffery’s short film Addie and the Lightning Bugs is also in the mix of Deep in the Heart FF’s always dynamic group of short film selections. The magical realism film focuses on a young girl who hatches a plan to stay put after her family anounces plans to move, aided by the mysterious lightning bugs in her backyard. Other highlights among the shorts are Dania Bdeir’s Warsha, about a crane operator in Beirut who is able to live out his secret passion and find freedom. The film is on the Academy Award Short List. Scott Lazer’s West by God, in which a West Virginia teenager goes on an awkward date with a local drug dealer where he shares a version of himself others don’t see. Fidel Ruiz-Healy, and Tyler Walker’s Midnight Award winner Dead Enders follows a young gas-station clerk on the midnight shift who must fight for his life versusan ancient race of mind-controlling parasites are other shorts to look out for.

Short films and indie filmmaking in a real practical way will also be the focus of the “Mobile Movie Making” filmmaker panel hosted by Bart Weiss, Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, and co-creator of Fire Bones. The panel will discuss how cell phone in your pocket can be the key piece of equipment for your next film.

Once again, Deep in the Heart FF will present its Made Deep in the Heart Screenplay Grant. This grant is awarded to the winner of the film festival’s screenplay contest, and it provides a variety of elements for producing that screenplay in Waco including  up to 4 nights of complimentary hotel stay provided by the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau for pre-production scouting or during the production, up to $2,500 in rebates provided by the Deep in the Heart Film Festival, camera and lighting Packages courtesy and 5 hours of free filmmaking consultation courtesy of Vision Vehicle Studios. The Waco Trolley Filmmaker Shuttle also returns to make it easy for filmmakers to get to Waco. Filmmakers can catch a free ride from DFW Airport to Waco, with a return trip at the end of the festival. Another favorite coming back is the Waco Film Locations Tour, where the film festival takes visiting filmmakers around town and show what Waco has to offer. Representatives from the Texas Film Commission, the Texas Media Production Alliance, and the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau all participate to talk about the benefits and opportunities found by filming in Texas.

Another thing Deep in the Heart FF is famous for is the film festival’s parties and the enthusiastic local embrace of the incoming filmmakers. Each night of the festival will conclude with an after-party where local attendees can enjoy a more casual connection with those visiting filmmakers. Each party will be hosted at locally owned Waco hot spots including Brotherwell Brewing, Southern Roots Brewing, and Stay Classy Waco. Those parties will include the film festival’s famous party game night, a campfire themed event, and a bronco bull riding machine.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Dedicates Las Colinas Theater to Legendary Filmmaker John Carpenter

0

Since opening in 2018, and given its proximity to John W. Carpenter Freeway, named for the Texas businessman and agriculturalist who died in 1959, Alamo Drafthouse Las Colinas has always honored a very different John Carpenter – the legendary filmmaker behind HALLOWEEN, THE THING, and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. The lobby’s state-of-the-art interchangeable photo opp wall features an homage to BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA alongside a replica alien from THEY LIVE, and a complete John Carpenter-themed Mondo poster gallery lines the hallways.

Now the theater has officially carried an alternate name in honor of the legendary filmmaker Mr. Carpenter. Bill DiGaetano, CEO of Alamo Drafthouse North Texas revealed a plaque proclaiming the theater to be the “John Carpenter Cinema” and ribbon cutting ceremony with one of Mr. Carpenter’s most iconic creations – HALLOWEEN’s Michael Myers.

The plaque dedicated to Carpenter reads:

JOHN CARPENTER CINEMA

“Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”

From babysitter slashers to pirate ghosts to shapeshifting monsters to subliminal aliens, writer/director/composer John Carpenter has entertained and terrified generations of film lovers with genre classics like ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, CHRISTINE, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, and THEY LIVE. Because of his incalculable influence on cinema, as of Thursday, May 25th, 2023, this Alamo Drafthouse Cinema shall hereby and forevermore be known as the John Carpenter Cinema.

Additionally, Mr. Carpenter was in attendance for two screenings of his cult classic films, THE THING and THEY LIVE, and participated in an extended film introduction ahead of each film.

Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski To Receive 2023 Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting

AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL (AFF), the premier film festival recognizing writers’ and filmmakers’ contributions to film, television, and new media, is continuing its 30 years of support for screenwriters. Austin Film Festival is committed to supporting screenwriters at all levels, including our long-standing partnership with the WGA in their ongoing strike.

Austin Film Festival is excited to announce that writing partners SCOTT ALEXANDER & LARRY KARASZEWSKI will attend this year’s Festival to receive the 2023 Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting. Previous recipients include Buck Henry (1997), Lawrence Kasdan (2001), Frank Pierson (2003), Nancy Meyers (2016), and Scott Frank (2021). Alexander and Karaszewski’s partnership led to prominent films and television such as ED WOOD (1994), THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT (1996), MAN ON THE MOON (1999), and AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON (2016).

Alexander and Karaszewski met when they were freshman roommates at USC’s School of Cinema. On a whim, they wrote a screenplay during their senior year, which sold a week after graduation. They are best known for writing very unusual biopics with larger-than-life characters. They wrote the highly-acclaimed ED WOOD, for which they were nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild. They followed this with THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, for which they won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, as well as a special Writers Guild award for civil rights and liberties. They scripted the extremely postmodern MAN ON THE MOON, the life story of Andy Kaufman. They wrote BIG EYES, the strange-but-true story of Margaret and Walter Keane, for which they received an Indie Spirit Best Screenplay nomination. For their first television project, they created the hit miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON, for which they won the Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA Award for Best Limited Series. Their most recent film, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, is the celebrated tale of Rudy Ray Moore.

Other than biopics, Alexander and Karaszewski are quite eclectic. They wrote the hit Stephen King adaptation 1408. They produced the Bob Crane biopic AUTO FOCUS, and they wrote and directed the comedy SCREWED. They have also written numerous family films, including PROBLEM CHILD, PROBLEM CHILD 2, AGENT CODY BANKS, and GOOSEBUMPS.

Alexander, a native of Los Angeles, started his Hollywood career toiling on low-budget horror films as a music editor. As a director, his work has appeared on MTV and Nickelodeon. He also wrote for HBO’s TALES FROM THE CRYPT and the television series MONSTERS, which he directed. Scott is a Mentor in the USC School of Cinema, and he’s served four terms on the Writers Guild’s Board of Directors. He has volunteered as a Sundance Writing Lab advisor numerous times, as well as teaching at writing workshops around the world. Scott is married, with three children.

Karaszewski, born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, worked as a film critic for an NBC affiliate’s nightly news program, as well as writing and directing BEYOND OUR CONTROL, a weekly half-hour satirical television show. Larry is an active Los Angeles cineaste and is the Vice President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. His humorous commentaries on cult movies can be seen at TrailersFromHell.com.

MTV Documentary Films Acquires PAY OR DIE Directed by Award-Winning Filmmakers Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer

0

MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to the deeply powerful and terrifying feature PAY OR DIE. The film received rave reviews at SXSW in March and is directed and produced by award-winning directors Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer.

Today, nearly two-million Americans living with diabetes are being held hostage by the pharmaceutical industry, as many cannot afford insulin. Without this life-sustaining drug, they will be dead in days. Access to this drug has become increasingly more difficult, as the cost to patients in America soars.  PAY OR DIE follows families struggling to afford their medications and reveals the harrowing reality of living with a chronic illness in the richest country in the world. From a mother-and-daughter struggling to rebuild their lives after spending their rent money on insulin, to a young adult diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic, to a Minnesota family thrust into the national spotlight when their 26-year-old son dies from rationing his insulin, PAY OR DIE highlights this devastating struggle to survive while living with diabetes.

“This film, in the tradition of documentaries that nudge the world, exposes the astronomical and unconscionable costs of life saving drugs. The big business of Pharma rules over whether the afflicted will live or die,” said executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

“Pay or Die plays like a horror film that’s both urgent and harrowing; a must see that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats in utter disbelief” said Nina L. Diaz and Liza Burnett Fefferman, Co-Heads of MTV Documentary Films.

“Knowing that Americans are dying trying to afford the same lifesaving medication that keeps me alive left Rachael and me enraged,” said filmmakers Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer.  “As filmmakers, we knew we had to highlight this social injustice. Our film, Pay or Die will serve as a cautionary tale for the whole world to understand what happens when healthcare is treated too much like a business and not a public service. We are honored to join forces with MTV Documentary Films to strengthen the voices that need to be heard so change can be made.”

The sale was negotiated by Lance McPherson on behalf of MTV Documentary Films. Paul Szynol of Film Law Group was the legal representative on behalf of the filmmakers, and Travis Tammero of UTA represented the filmmakers as their sales agent.

PAY OR DIE will serve as the closing night event at the upcoming Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City on June 8th. MTV Documentary Films is planning a theatrical release and robust awards campaign later this year before its streaming premiere launch on Paramount +.

PAY OR DIE is executive produced by Sheila Nevins, Trish Adlesic, Sarah Silverman, Amy Zvi, Regina K. Scully, Lauran Bromley, Douglas Choi, Dawn Bonder, Marci Wiseman, Russell Long, Sarah Lucas and Zak Kilberg. The film is produced by Rachael Dyer, Scott Alexander Ruderman, and Yael Melamede, and directed by Dyer and Ruderman. Ruderman is the cinematographer; Will Rogers is the editor and Toby Shimin is the supervising editor. Music is by T. Griffin.

ABOUT MY FATHER – A Review by Cynthia Flores

ABOUT MY FATHER – A Review by Cynthia Flores

First, off full disclosure, I’m a huge Sebastian Maniscalco fan. I’ve seen almost all his standard comedy routines. I’ve seen him pay his dues in small parts in big movies. So I was thrilled when I heard about him doing this film, About My Father, which is very much based on his standup comedy, which is based on his real life. So many of the situations shown in the movie were actually talked about on stage during his sets. He really does have a hardcore Italian immigrant dad. The big win here is that he got the one and only Robert “frickin” De Niro to play his father.

The storyline for About My Father is this. When Sebastian (Sebastian Maniscalco) tells his old-school proud Italian immigrant father, Salvo (Robert De Niro), that he is planning to propose to his long-time, blue-blooded, comes-from-old money girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb), Salvo insists that he must meet the girl’s family before he gives his son his grandmother’s wedding ring, to see if they are good enough for his son.

It so happens that the young couple has been invited to her family’s summer house for the Fourth of July weekend. Since Salvo is widowed and would miss being with his son over the holiday, he agrees to go with them. That is where the fun begins.

Salvo is a fish out of water in the lavish lifestyle of Ellie’s family. Her mother, Tigger (Kim Cattrall), is a US Senator, and her husband, Bill (David Rasche), is a hotel mogul. They both like Sabastian. So does her hippie younger brother Doug (Brett Dier). The trouble is with her playboy good-for-nothing brother Lucky (Anders Holm), who embraces all the perks of growing up filthy rich. His idea of fun is to tease and torture Sabastian as much as possible. The film follows everyone on this eventful holiday weekend as these two miss-matched families try to get along.

The film itself really gets the audience laughing. And the director was smart by keeping the movie to a slim trim hour and twenty-nine-minute running time. It kept the story from adding any fluff to make it longer. But, unfortunately, there are times, in its leanness, the characters don’t get to flesh out their emotions as much as they could have. They have Robert De Nero and Kim Cattrall in the cast. So they have the chops to go deep. But the director decided to stay with the comedy and delivered on that point. It just would have been a better film if they had taken the time to add more heart and depth to the story instead of keeping it at a sitcom level of emotions.

I give About My Father 3.7 stars. You’ll get it if you’re a hardcore Sebastian Maniscalco fan. If you aren’t, then as Sebastian might say in his exaggerated Italian tough guy accent., “Just keep walking. I hear the Little Mermaid is playing in the theater next door. That might be more your speed.”

THE LITTLE MERMAID – A Review by Cynthia Flores

THE LITTLE MERMAID – A Review by Cynthia Flores

The original 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid became an iconic part of many people’s childhoods. I know grown women in their 40s that can sing all the words to the song Part of Your World. The original won two Oscars and made the Online Film and Television Association’s Hall of Fame in 2021. So needless to say, it’s a very well-known film.

In the past, Disney has chosen to do live-action remakes of popular classics from their collection. Some have missed the mark, like 2019’s Dumbo, and some have succeeded. Such as 2017’s Beauty and the Beast. Where critics declared it even better than the original. I don’t believe the new Little Mermaid will get such acclaim. It falls somewhere in the middle.

Disney took the story from the original 1837 fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. They gave Andersen’s story the old Disney scrub-up, and this is the version we all know and love now. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, Ariel (Halle Bailey), is a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Her father, King Triton (Javier Bardem), forbids her to go near humans. They are all dangerous, like the ones that killed her mother. But Ariel is a headstrong teenage mermaid. Longing to learn more about the world beyond the sea and about the young Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) that she saved from a storm. Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), to experience life on land. Ariel visits the surface, falls for the dashing Prince, and works toward her happy ending. That is as much as I can tell you without giving away too many spoilers.

Now my review. I want to start with what I liked about the film. First, Halle Bailey from the singing group Chloe x Halle as Ariel is a great singer. And when she is speaking, she actually sounds like the animated version of Ariel. There were a lot of emotions on the web, both for and against this Disney remake. First, even attempting to remake one of their biggest animated hits took a lot of work. But secondly, to recast the lead from the original animated Irish-looking mermaid with bright red hair and pale skin to the live-action biracial actress with locs that are brown and red-tinged was brave. I also liked Disney’s choice to have different skin tones and hair textures for all of Triton’s daughters to represent the seven seas. Even Triton went from an old Nordic-looking animated character to the ever-stunning and imposing Javier Bardem with his distinctive Spanish accent. Really, Melissa McCarthy was the only person who looked almost exactly like their animated character Ursula. I want to go on record as saying that her Ursula stole the film right out from under everyone else. Her scenes are worth the price of admission.

What I did not like about the film is there is no real chemistry between Ariel and Prince Eric. Making something live-action means you have to bring it all. Real props and genuine emotions. I blame the casting of Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. He just couldn’t match Ariels’ innocence and charm. And her love for him is the only reason that she made a deal with Ursula in the first place. So their love story needed to be convincing. Also, why did they feel the need to take an animated film that was only a glorious 1-hour 23 min long film and stretch it into 2 hours 15 min?

I expected so much more from veteran director Rob Marshall. His strong suit is musicals made into films. I don’t know what cylinder was not firing for him in this movie. But this Little Mermaid was missing whatever spark of “Magic” the original had. My eight-year-old niece was angry with me after we went to the screening because I didn’t like the film as much as she did. Everyone’s a critic.

I gave The Little Mermaid 3.5 stars only because I loved Ursula so much. It will be liked by the little ones that have never seen the animated masterpiece. But, for the rest of us, it did not fill the big shoes of the original.
