SERIOUSLY SINGLE – A Review by Hollywood Hernandez

Seriously Single is a South African (all in English) romantic comedy on Netflix that revolves around two female roommates who really, really, really like to drink and party. Dineo is a beautiful woman who was left at the altar by her fiancé. She’s a woman who desires more than anything to be married. She’s also constantly pressured by her divorced mother who wants grandbabies to make her life complete.

Her roommate is Noni, a woman who is entirely happy with her single status. Every night the two ladies troll the city’s hotspots looking for a good time and an occasional one-night stand to chase away their loneliness.

One night after another affair that ends badly, Dineo posts a drunk text on Instagram from her bed crying about her bad experiences with men. The video goes viral and earns her the nickname of “Desperate Bey.”

The movie makes a nice transition from comedy to romance (although I think it would have been a better movie if it was simply one or the other). Noni (Tumi Morake) finds romance with a bar owner while Fulu Mugovhani’s character, Dineo, is obsessed with marrying every man she meets because she simply doesn’t want to be alone.

Dineo bumps into her former fiancé and after rebuffing his advances she decides to give him a second chance. Her reuniting with her ex ends the friendship between her and her roommate and, having nowhere else to go, she moves in with her ex, Lunga, played by Bohang Moeko.

The ending of the movie is pretty predictable, but you do feel empathy for Dineo as she learns life’s lessons about settling for love just because you don’t want to be alone. The two female characters in the lead are very likable and give good performances in the movie. Also, stay tuned into the ending credits because there are some bonus scenes and a couple of funny outtakes.

The movie is rated TV-MA and has a run time of 1 hour and 47 minutes. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate Seriously Single a MEDIUM.
