SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 – A Review by John Strange

The first film, Sonic the Hedgehog, opened in 2020 to an $85 million weekend, and a $319 million run.  But the real story is the film was GOOD.  Sonic and the animated characters meshed superbly with the live ones.  James Marsden as Tom (the town Sheriff) and Tika Sumpter as Maddie (Tom’s wife) played off their animated co-star, Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz) very well.  The good guys were up against the dastardly villain, Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Now, a little over two years after the original film’s release date, we get a sequel.  Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gives us a story equal to the quality of the first film.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is back.  At the same time, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) has arrived on Earth to find what is possibly the greatest source of power in the galaxy, and destroy Sonic if he can.

The action is fun to watch with loads of action and humor.  The two hours of the film flies by.  Sonic is aided by Tails (voiced by Collen O’Shanussy) who arrives from his (as Sonic keeps referring to her) planet to help our hero.  She has a plethora of cool gadgets that pop up at the right times to help the team as they strive to win the day.

My favorite character is Rachel (Natasha Rothwell) as Maddie’s older sister.  I must say that Rachel has a powerful personality and no one in their right mind would cross her on purpose.  Watching her ire grow and explode was awesome but simultaneously frightening!

This film earned 5-stars from me for its warmth and humor.  Everyone does a great job with their characters.

Stay all the way through the credits.  In the immortal words of the late great Stan Lee, ‘Nuff said’.
