Today’s youth spend hours and hours on social media, especially the rich ones. They tell the world where they are and what they are doing. Sophia Coppola has written a screenplay based on Nancy Jo Sales’ March 2010 Vanity Fair article (now a Harper Collins book) about several teens, using social media like Facebook, who would watch for celebrities to leave town and then break into their homes because the idiots either don’t lock their doors or else they leave the house keys under the mat!
The Bling Ring follows Rebecca (Katie Chang) and Marc (Israel Broussard) as their friendship grows and blossoms into something out of an adult’s nightmare. Their troupe of thieves grows to include Nicki (Emma Watson), Sam (Talissa Farmiga), and Chloe (Claire Julien). Their greed gets spread across Facebook as they party on stolen cash and parade around wearing the stolen clothing and accessories.
Cameos by Paris Hilton and Kirsten Dunst plus news footage of the various victims add to this visually attractive film. But this is a story of teens with no moral compass and even less parental guidance. It is a story that should frighten us all. For all of you who enjoy reality TV or who hang out on social media just bit too much, go see this film. Yes, see this film and think about who is watching you live your life.
