THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD – A Review by Hollywood Hernandez
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is supposed to be the movie that leads us all back to the local cineplex with no showings on any streaming formats. If you want to see this movie, you’ll have to go see it at the movies.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a serious comedy with great chemistry between the three lead characters, Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek. The three are all adept at playing comedy roles but it’s Hayek as Sonia who steals the movie with her over-the-top performance. She is hilarious in everything she does.
The movie starts with Michael Bryce (Reynolds) having nightmares about failing to protect a high-ranking Japanese official and losing his license as a bodyguard. He goes to therapy and his therapist convinces him that he needs a vacation and to change his violent ways. So, he heads on a getaway to the island of Capri.
While on vacation he ends up in the middle of a shoot-out between some bad guys and Sonia (Hayek), is soon reunited with Darius Kincaid (Jackson), and is forced back into the bodyguard game to help the couple stay alive. However, that’s a bit hard to do when the only thing he will use to protect his clients is pepper spray.
Antonio Banderas is the “James Bond Type” bad guy who has a plan to blackout all of Europe because of a trade agreement that was ended with the European nations and his home country of Greece. His team of henchmen chases the three assassins in order to wipe them out, but the three are recruited by the C.I.A. and are now on the team of the good guys.
While they are on the run Bryce seeks the help of his father, played by Morgan Freeman, who is a retired bodyguard living in Italy. Freeman is fantastic as the distinguished father of Bryce, and his character has a few surprises up his sleeve in the final third of the movie.
The entire movie is a nonsensical farce of a James Bond or an Ethan Hunt movie, but it will keep you laughing throughout. The movie is rated R for violence and a few mild sexual scenes with a run time of 1 hour and 39 minutes. I’m not sure if this is the movie that is going to lead everyone back to the theater, but it ain’t bad. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate it a LARGE.
