Tom Clancy’s WITHOUT REMORSE – A Review by John Strange

Tom Clancy’s WITHOUT REMORSE – A Review by John Strange

Tom Clancy’s novels have spawned such films as The Hunt for Red October (novel – 1984, film – 1990, starring Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan) and The Sum of All Fears (novel – 1991, film – 2002, starring Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan).  Without Remorse (novel – 1993) is the latest of the novels to hit the big screen (and Amazon Prime Video).

The characters are different but related to those in the previous films in the franchise.  In Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, we are introduced to the members of a Navy Seal team led by Lt. Commander Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Senior Chief Petty Officer John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan) and their CIA handler, Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell).  Karen is related to Admiral Jim Greer (James Earl Jones) from the earlier films.

The “op” that the team works at the beginning of the film has a ripple effect affecting all of the action that takes place in the film.  Its tendrils are seen and felt in every scene and every fight throughout the story.

That action tears John Kelly’s heart out but gives us a character as strong and dynamic as Jack Ryan ever was.

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse is action packed with some excellent fight scenes, utilizing both with fists and weapons.  It sets up a possible new group of action films centered on anti-hero John Kelly, films which I have to admit I would enjoy seeing.
