About The Video Association of Dallas

When the Video Association of Dallas (“VAD,” the 501(c)(3) behind VideoFest) was founded in 1989, its mission was to promote an understanding of video as a creative medium and cultural force in our society, and to support and advance the work of Texas artists working in video and the electronic arts. In that time, video was a relatively new medium that, unlike film, democratized the ability of storytellers from all communities to have their voices heard.  During the first two decades of the VideoFest, this mission was accomplished primarily through exhibition, where the Dallas Video Festival screened and promoted little-known and groundbreaking videos from a diverse range of under-served communities with voices not heard at traditional film festivals. The Dallas Video Festival was the ersatz African American, Latino, Asian, Native American, GBLT, international, documentary, performance, experimental and video art festival when such festivals did not exist in their specialized niches
