What Makes Us – Interview with The Mundo Sisters

Mundo Sisters with Vero

"Rena Mundo Croshere and Nadine Mundo are a sibling director team based in Los Angeles. The Mundo Sisters created and directed WHAT MAKES US, a new series of short films on elite female athletes for ESPNW."

Click through for my interview with the Mundo Sisters.

The Mundo Sisters first worked with ESPNW on the highly successful, ROWDY RONDA ROUSEY Nine for IX short film.  Within a day of it's premiere the short film became the 2nd most watched ESPN short in history.  This huge accomplishment is where Rena, Nadine and I started our conversation.

The amazing success of the Ronda Rousey short gave the sisters a lot of clout with ESPNW and they approached the entertainment giant to make more films.  The Mundo Sisters originally pitched women who were in individual sports that were mainly male dominated, like Rousey in MMA.

But ESPN had another idea in mind.

Even with the FIFA's Women's World Cup on a competitor's channel ESPNW understood the impact of showcasing America's finest soccer team.  It's seems a perfect fit that the ladies have once again made it to the finals and even more fitting they will play Japan again!  The first of the What Makes Us series revolved around Canadian/American sensation Sydney Leroux.

Up next was America's workhorse midfielder and one of the passionate leaders on the team, Megan Rapinoe.

But The Mundo Sisters were tasked with also showcasing an international side of the series and focused originally on Brazilian Marta. But fate would push them to another soccer player.

Vero…

Siestas in Spain weren't the only unique issue the sisters have had to battle in their What Makes Us series.  I asked the ladies about their epic water shoots for the not-yet released film on Carissa Moore.

I changed gears and asked the sisters about their first documentary.

It was a very personal story that helped allow the sisters to find their filmmaking purpose in life.

We ended our chat by discussing the ladies style and some of their main film influences.
