AJFF 2020 – HAPPY TIMES – INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR MICHAEL MAYER

Shabbat takes a violent turn in the latest dark comedy from Director Michael Mayer.

Over the course of a Shabbat dinner at a fancy Hollywood Hills mansion, a toxic mix of alcohol, egos, cultural differences, lust and greed derails the evening rather quickly and things spin out of control. Secrets are revealed, relationships are tested and getting out in one piece will be the ultimate challenge.

The witty and wild nature of HAPPY TIMES seems to be a mixture of CLUE being told by Quentin Tarantino.  Michael Mayer, Co-Writer Guy Ayal and a tremendous ensemble cast test the bloody waters of humor and decorum.  Set in one solitary Shabbat evening we are treated to a real indie gem.  I especially loved performances by Liraz Chamami and the always game Michael Aloni who shine.  Michael was awesome enough to chat with me about his many filmmaking nods, his awesome cast, the cool home showcased in the movie and even talked about using a Shofar as a deadly weapon.

The movie held it’s North American Premiere at the 18th Austin Jewish Film Festival.

Michael Mayer is a director/writer to keep on your radar and can’t wait to see what’s next!!
