I love watching films that show me a different outlook than mine. I majored in history once upon a time because I love learning about the history of people, nations, or groups. This film, Confessions of a Menopausal Femme Fatale, is a one-woman show about the life of Satori Shakoor.
Raised by a single mom who worked multiple jobs to give her children opportunities she never had, Satori tells us of her life and her trials growing up. She emphasizes sections of her monologue with songs and voices feeding her lines to enhance her tale.
She speaks freely about some very tough subjects that, as a late-60s white man, I can see why others might think I couldn’t understand what Satori has to say. I am a well-read man who has lived for many years around women who experienced many of the roadblocks, or rather the challenges that our storyteller brings into her story and presents to us.
Menopause is only a small part of what molded her life. She freely talks about the highs and the lows of her life. My favorite part of this film is learning she was a background singer (Bride of Funkenstein) with George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic. How cool is that!
Confessions of a Menopausal Femme Fatale is a story that not everyone will enjoy because she pulls no punches, but her level of honesty kept me watching for the entire film. It’s an autobiographical one-woman show worth the time to watch it.
