Tuesday—DIFF
If there were to be any complaints about the Dallas International Film Festival, it would be the lack of science fiction s films programmed for the event. While comedies and romances are a major part of the cinematic landscape, the sci-fi experience is more than a bit lacking at DIFF. That is one of the reasons I was thrilled to see Extraterrestrial was to be included in the 2012 edition.
Extraterrestrial is part romantic comedy, part tragic betrayal and all entertainment. The film is being presented as a part of the World Cinema Showcase. It is from Spain and is in Spanish with English subtitles.
It is the story of Julio and Julia who wake up after a night of passion to find the entire town gone. In the sky is a spaceship that stretches four miles across, hovering above the city. As the two work-out exactly what to do next, Julia’s next door neighbor comes over. He has decided not to evacuate the city. The man has a crush on Julia and doesn’t trust this new man Julio. Then it gets more complicated.
The film is directed by Nacho Vigalondo. He mixes comedy and more serious elements as he examines how different humans react to a monumental event. His deft touch brings real emotions to extraordinary events. The film has a science fiction bent but it is much more about human emotions than aliens rampaging.
But the biggest reason to see Extraterrestrial is the performance of Michelle Jenner as Julia. She shows some great comic timing as she juggles different relationships while trying to keep every man from discovering exactly what is happening in her apartment. Her face expresses surprise the way that few actresses can. Besides, she is one beautiful woman.
Extraterrestrial is a true revelation and a film not to be missed. It is easily one of the best works presented at the Dallas International Film Festival.
Extraterrestrial screens again on Friday April 20th at the Texas Theatre.
