DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE – A Review by Cynthia Flores
This new film delivers, in their own humble words, “The ultimate Superhero team-up throwdown.” I am talking about the third installment in the franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine. It is directed by Shawn Levy, who is good with buddy films. He is the same man who gave us the hit 2010 film Date Night starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey. That action-comedy film was about an ordinary couple that, due to mistaken identity, ended up in action movie-type situations. With his new action-comedy film Deadpool & Wolverine, he is showing an extraordinary couple of superheroes from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) who are forced to work together against a common enemy to survive. This is a very bloody and twisted buddy film.
Due to the Fu*king agreement, I was highly encouraged to sign by the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I cannot go into much detail about this movie on the off chance I will give away any important plot point twists. That being said, I can tell you how I felt watching the advance screening and some of my reactions to what was shown.
Feelings: Excited, thrilled, happy, scared, grossed out but could not look away.
Reactions: “Ha! Ha! Ha!” “WTF” “How did they do that?” “OMG is that actually XXXXX?” “Oh, that’s gotta hurt!”
Please note I have seen the other two Deadpool films and brushed up on the classic 2017 Logan film starring Hugh Jackman and ending the storyline of Wolverine… supposedly I mean his character’s name is in the title of this new film. Deadpool touches on this fact as he taunts Wolverine in the film about what Fox did to the character and the new plans that Disney has for him.
I could not catch all the inside jokes that the screen was littered with. There is just that much thrown around. I missed stuff even with the help of my BFF Nezz, who watched the early screening with me. He is a fan extraordinaire who would kindly answer any quick questions I would throw at him between the incredible fight scenes.
Another reason to see and love this movie is that there are so many surprise appearances and older Marvel characters brought back to the big screen for this film. Any fan will be happy to shell out another wad of cash to watch it on the big screen a second and maybe a third time just to take notice of all the production work and details in the background.
I usually don’t like ultra-violent films. But I think the humor of all the Deadpool films helps make it easier to handle. And in this film, I must applaud their ability to be so capriciously violent in such confined spaces. Once you see the movie, you’ll know what I mean.
I give Deadpool & Wolverine 4-stars. It’s an uber-violent funny film. And, a perfect third movie to fit into the Deadpool franchise. Of course, wait till the end of the credits for all the extra bits.
