RICK AND MORTY: SEASON 4 – A Blu-ray/DVD and Digital HD Review by John Strange
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-raytm I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.
I love animation and enjoy most of the series on the various channels available in the U.S. I had never watched Rick and Morty before I received the season 4 offering. This series centers on Morty, a young boy who runs around the galaxy with his genius Grandfather, Rick, stealing “stuff” and frankly, killing people, other sentient beings, animals, and insects pretty indiscriminately. Even the show’s artists and the creators talk about the amount of blood involved in this show.
The episodes do not follow ANY pattern or story flow that I could discern, with themes meandering all over the place. The only constant seems to be the blood and gore involved. Did I become a fan? Not really. The closest I can come to describing the season is, actually the entire show, is that it is much like The Hangover, dumbed down with homicidal/amoral maniacs playing the primary roles. These guys are worse than Bugs Bunny!
What I enjoyed most about this offering are all of the bonus extras. I honestly wish I had watched them first. That act might have been enough to give me the right frame of mind to watch and enjoy the episodes (but I doubt it). The extra featurettes give us a great behind-the-scenes view with the creators, artists, and directors telling us about what goes into creating the episodes.
We also get an interesting featurette/episode in Japanese with English captions (based on the name of the director, Kaichi Sato). It’s a bloody, slasher martial arts, gruesome piece of anime but I enjoyed it more than the series itself. This was used, from what I can determine, as a teaser between the first and second half’s premieres.
All in all, Rick and Morty: Season 4 is a wild ride for fans. Not a fan? Approach with caution.
I give the show 4-stars for its technical merits even if the storylines are not my cup of tea!
