STEVE! (MARTIN) A DOCUMENTARY IN 2 PIECES – A Review by John Strange
Steve Martin is known for his wildly different style of humor. The story of his early career, from his teenage years, is covered in episode one entitled “Then”. We see how his humor and career were shaped by his family life and the people around him.
His humor was grown or perhaps developed in conjunction with his desire to be a magician. Humor was a part of his act that eventually overshadowed the prestidigitation.
This episode was a tour of Steve’s early life narrated by Steve and his friends and co-workers. His life was not always humorous, so I am glad he learned to handle it by developing his unique style.
Episode two, “Now” shows us the 75-year-old Steve and we see how his life is today. We learn of his wives and meet his lovely current wife. We see the friendship he has built with the amazing Martin Short, who has been on tour with him in recent years.
I am a huge fan of Mr. Martin. This documentary is a delightful visit with this man who has made us laugh time and time again with his jokes and songs.
The anecdotes by notables such as Eric Idle, Jerry Seinfeld, and Diane Keaton gave us some great insights into the man, especially when used with archival footage to enhance the stories being told. As expected, we see his famous saying, “Well, EXCUSE ME!” and several other memorable bits!
STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces is one of the best documentaries I have seen in years for all that it is as different from all of those other films as Steve’s career is from the average comedically talented performer!
