The Heat is a summer “buddy” film starring Sandra Bullock as FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn and Melissa McCarthy as Boston cop Shannon Mullins. The two are thrown together as they pursue a ruthless drug lord, each in their own non-conformist way. The two are as different as two law enforcement officers can be and still get the same results.
Ashburn is so smart that she is unable to “play nice” with the other agents. They do NOT like her. Heck, they don’t want to be in the same room with her because she seems to love making them look bad as she pulls rabbits (and evidence) seemingly out of thin air.
Mullins in a pain in her departments backside but she gets more busts than any other officer. She is abrasive on her good days and tends to scare the heck out even the nastiest “perp” given a chance. She carries a chrome plated revolver that she pulls at the drop of a hat.
The audience loved the chemistry between the two from their first shared scene. It drove me nuts until they share a night in Mullin’s favorite bar. They share one of the worst bar nights I have ever seen, powered by several triple shots and beer.
The action and story are what you expect for a summer film. They don’t require a lot of brain power to enjoy. While I admit that I did not buy in to the film for the first third of the movie, I enjoyed the last two thirds.
