TULLY – A Review by Hollywood Hernandez
In Tully, Charlize Theron is Marlo, a mother with a newborn and two more challenging elementary school kids. Tully is a modern day "Mary Poppins" who is hired by Marlo's well-to-do brother to get her some relief from her day to day mommy duties.
Tully is a night nanny so only Marlo, and the baby, have interaction with her. The two eventually form a special bond after Marlo gets over her initial fear that the quirky Tully may be trying to kill her family during the night.
Tully's optimism brings Marlo back to the version of herself who was once passionate about life, her kids and her husband. The movie is a realistic version of life for a mother with a newborn and a special needs son. It's a very funny film and anyone who has kids will easily relate to the story.
Diablo Cody, who won Best Screenwriter for 2007's Juno, is the writer of Tully. Her sense of humor comes through in the movie's script. Cody is not one to rely on clichés', but rather on modern mundane things that we see and go through in our day to day life, such as the difficulty of living a normal life when your breasts are always leaking mother's milk. Expressing milk is a big part of the movie and Cody makes the scenarios hilarious. Also, pay attention to some clues in the movie that help you to understand the ending. (I won't say anymore so that I don't ruin the plot for you.)
Theron gained 50 pounds for her role in the movie and is very convincing as a new mother. She says a steady diet of processed food and In and Out Burger helped her to create her physique.
Tully has a run time of 1 hour and 36 minutes and is rated R for language and some nudity. It is a very adult comedy. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Tully a LARGE.
