The Video Association of Dallas celebrates the films of the Dallas VideoFest Oct. 9-13, 2013 — VideoFest.org. Starting on Friday, October 4 with Expanded Cinema, the VideoFest will have a number of satellite events that will be taking place at various venues around Dallas.
“Even though we are spending the bulk of the VideoFest in Richardson at the Alamo Drafthouse, we will have events, special programming, and films in various other places around town starting with Expanded Cinema on the Omni Hotel downtown Dallas, which can be seen wherever you can see the Omni Hotel. Expanded Cinema almost takes on a deeper meaning since we have films and film-related events happening at various locations around town like the DMA, Gilley’s and the Texas Theatre,” said Bart Weiss, founder and artistic director of Dallas VideoFest.

Expanded Cinema 2: MultipliCity is a program of 13 new video art works curated by Mona Kasra, shown wrapping the 193 x 999-foot LED screen outside of the Omni Dallas Hotel, complimented by an audio simulcast on radio station 91.7 FM-KXT. Expanded Cinema can be seen from wherever the Omni is visible. It’s best viewed from the south side of downtown. Bring a lawn chair.

Opening Night of the Dallas VideoFest will be a party with the premiere film screening of TRUE TALES, an AMS Pictures original production, at the center. TRUE TALES centers on the remembrances of Nancy Myers. Shunning the press for nearly 50 years, Nancy Myers—the top-billed stripper “Tammi True” in Jack Ruby's Carousel Club in 1963—is finally ready to reveal what she knows about Ruby’s motives. With a pre-show live performance by Ruby Revue, Texas’ Premier Burlesque and Variety Show, Tammi True will do a Q&A after the documentary film. To celebrate the opening of Dallas VideoFest, come dressed in your best early 1960s “Mad Men” attire. Tammi True will judge the best costume.

These performers digitally manipulate music and video using motion. NoiseFold is a live cinema and electronic music ensemble founded by artist-performers, David Stout and Cory Metcalf originally from New Mexico. The group utilizes sensor activated computer systems and complex audio-visual feedback circuitry to synthesize a mesmerizing array of bio-mimetic visual forms that generate sound. Critics have described the result as “a powerful synesthetic experience where noise, music and image interact on a symphonic scale.” NoiseFold routinely performs around the world from concert halls, art museums and art-house film theaters to planetariums, and botanic gardens. Also, at the MAC event, avant-garde music ensemble, Trio Kaze, from Germany will open the show.

Video Association of Dallas presents a presentation and lecture by organizers of The Borscht Film Festival at the Dallas Contemporary art gallery. This quasi-yearly event is held at iconic Miami venues and showcases films created by emerging regional filmmakers telling Miami stories that go beyond the typical portrayal of the city often presented as a beautiful but vapid party town, forging the cinematic identity of the city. The Borscht Film Festival believes in Miami's potential to host a world-class independent film industry and are doing their part by inspiring collaboration between members of the idiosyncratic generation that was born in the 80's and came of age with the city itself. This 'Miami New Wave' of talent has traditionally abandoned Miami for larger markets, but by keeping these artists working in their home city at least once a year they believe they can build global interest for this wholly original film movement. It is their belief that Miami has the cinematic richness of character to compete with Scorcese's New York, Fellini's Rome, or Godard's Paris.

VideoFest officially opens at Gilley’s in Dallas on Wednesday, Oct. 9. It moves to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Richardson Thursday, Oct. 10 and more than 140 screenings take place in Richardson until Sunday, Oct. 13.
VideoFest (VideoFest.org) is now the oldest and largest video festival in the United States and continues to garner critical and popular acclaim.
