DREAM HORSE – Review By Gadi Elkon

Experience the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely race horse bred by small town bartender, Jan Vokes (Toni Collette). With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbors to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream and compete with the racing elites.

Here is my review of DREAM HORSE.

DREAM HORSE starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis! Follow the inspiring true story of an unlikely thoroughbred race horse, Dream Alliance, directed by Euros Lyn (BBC One’s Doctor Who, ITV’s Broadchurch) this Spring 2021. The upcoming heartfelt family comedy saddles up into theaters on May 21st and on demand June 11th.

Academy-nominated Toni Collette delivers a subtle performance that makes Dream Horse a real winner.  Her emotional growth through the film is the real highlight and expands on the Australian’s tremendous appeal.  The uplifting nature of Jan Vokes story is perfectly captured in the movie.  The added growth of Owen Teale’s and Damian Lewis’ portrayals give the film a tremendous connective reality behind the key figures of the Dream Alliance.  Euros Lyn’s direction allows for moments to connect with the rest of the alliance and fully tells the group’s transformation in their endeavor.

Neil McKay’s witty script helps keep the alliance group on it’s toes as we trot along the story.  The pacing of Dream Horse is a real refreshing element as it doesn’t bog down at any point and still allows for the drama to hit you.  Just as a horse race is fast paced so to does the film feel as exciting.  Cinematographer Eric Wilson has a crisp and open visual style that showcases the powerful rush horse racing can have on viewers.  The tension is palatable and bleeds into the characters exhilaration.  Horse racing films can sometimes be bogged down by the shady nature that surrounds the sport and this film bypasses that downer.  Now the health of the horse is a major plot point to the film and something that truly is the most dramatic element.  We fully get the harsh realities of the sport when looking at the impact injuries can have.  In the end though we are given a touching tribute to this real-life story.

Dream Horse is a great family-friendly film that holds enough humor and drama to make for a perfect movie going experience.  The film is out now in theaters.
