LUCIFER: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON – A Blu-ray/DVD and Digital HD Review by John Strange

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with access to a copy of Lucifer: The Complete Fourth Season on their viewing website that I used for the review in this Blog Post.  The opinions I share are my own.

In 2016, Lucifer jumped out of our TV’s with a premise that grabbed my attention.  Satan, aka Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), has gotten tired (bored?) of his life in Hell and moved to Los Angeles, California.  Not Las Vegas, aka Sin City, but L.A.?  That was only one of the many pieces to this puzzle that interested me.

This was a man who willingly tells anyone and everyone just who he is.  Being in La-La Land, no one believes him!  Not even LAPD Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), who from episode one, season one, has worked with this fallen angel.

By the time season four started we have met several members of Lucifer’s family including his mother (played by Tricia Helfer, a woman who, sans mama’s soul, appears later in the series).  Plus we have a demon, Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), who takes her talent for killing to become a bounty hunter.  She is both companion and friend to Lucifer.

We also have Lucifer dealing with the disaster of Chloe seeing his true face at the end of the previous season.  Chloe spends the season dealing with the sight but it’s what she did between seasons on her vacation to Italy that creates several problems for Lucifer and the other members of the cast.

We also have the privilege of seeing how much chaos the first human woman, Eve (Inbar Lavi), creates when she escapes from Heaven looking for “action” from her old boyfriend, Lucifer!  Her appearance fuels the fears of a certain Vatican agent who has possession of a prophecy that when Lucifer reunites with his first girlfriend, evil will be released upon the world.

Along the way, we have Chloe and Lucifer solving murders and dealing with their friends, family, and co-workers, some of whom are in the know about Lucifer.  The season has subplots that took me by total surprise and a few that bothered me a little as a man with a religious upbringing.  Not in an “I can’t watch this sacrilege”-way but more is a “this isn’t the way I was taught but there is always more than one way to interpret stories and parables”-way.

Every season of this show has taken me by surprise in one way or another.  This season I was surprised to see that the devil’s heart is more angelic than I thought possible.  His desire for right and wrong is closer to that of an avenging angel than a demonic aggressive killer.  I find that I like this possible view of the fallen angel.

When I first heard that the show would not see a new season, I was okay with it.  Not happy, but the season’s ending was adequate.  Now that I have learned of the upcoming season 5, I am very happy and look forward to watching it!  I hope that, like season 4, it is a one I can give a 5-star rating to!  If you haven’t watched this series, this is an absolutely binge-worthy show!

And the extras for this season?  All we have are a nice group of deleted scenes that are interesting.  They are interesting but none are truly noteworthy.
