The Casual Vacancy – Interview with Director Jonny Campbell

Director Jonny Campbell discusses his latest film, J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy, and much more!  Click through for my chat with kick ass Brit Director, Jonny Campbell.

I started my chat with Jonny by asking about the long working relationship he's had with his DP Tony Slater Ling.

In Jonny's career he's worked with some huge creative writers like Paul Abbott (UK's Shameless), Stephen Moffat (Dr. Who), and now J.K. Rowling.  I asked him about working with those big figures and also he expanded working with new creative minds as well.

Jonny explained how he doesn't chase genres but stories.

Here is a clip from one of the two Dr. Who Episodes Jonny directed – Vincent and The Doctor (a beloved episode!)

Jonny got more in depth into what stories he chooses to tackle.

We jumped into the terrific mini-series, The Casual Vacancy, by first discussing the tremendous ensemble cast.  Michael Gambon and Julia Mckenzie were first up in our discussion and Jonny shared an AMAZING story of trying to get Michael for another role!!

On the other side of the spectrum we talked about newcomer Abigail Lawrie, who is captivating as Krystal Weedon.

I asked about having such a strong female based cast and crew with J.K, screenwriter Sarah Phelps, and the great actresses in the series.

Jonny expanded on getting to work with strong female characters in his past work as well.

Here is a fun behind the scenes look at the show.

I asked about the amazing music in the show which is done by a group called, Solomon Grey.

And here is a video by this dynamic group.

For my final question I had a bit of fun this time.  I asked Jonny about two of his main influences.  First up is the great films from production company Merchant Ivory films.

The second major influence is the greatness of Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and originally X-Files fame.

I'll end this post by showcasing Jonny Campbell and the In The Flesh gang accepting their BAFTA awards!
